The History of Criminal Justice in Texas

Texas holds a legendary status in the criminal justice field because of its history as the last bastion of the wild, wild West. They had Texas Rangers, Wyatt Earp, cowboy sheriffs that roamed the desert catching bank robbers and murderers who flocked to the Lone Star State because of its vast size and close proximity to the country of Mexico. Texas was a crazy place back then for law enforcement and criminal justice, and it remains so to this day- although in a much different, less glamorous and romanticized way.

Criminal Justice Education

Texas offers one of the largest selections of criminal justice educational opportunities in the country, with more than 100 criminal justice schools in the state. Not only that, Texas also has numerous scholarships and special education and training programs for criminal justice students, as well as some of the most nationally renowned criminal justice programs in the entire United States of America. Some of the scholarships that are offered are the HSF/Peierls Rising Star Scholarship, Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Scholarships.

The Future of Criminal Justice in Texas

Criminal justice professionals are in very high demand in Texas, especially in the areas around the Mexico border, due to high crime rates, drug trafficking and the drug cartel war that is going on right across the border from big cities like San Antonio and Laredo, which lie right on the border between the two countries. Criminal justice professionals get paid slightly below the average national salary, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but the jobs offer plenty of opportunities to move up the ladder, especially in big cities like Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth and the college town of Austin.
